Adolphus Washington Greely (b. March 27, 1844, Newburyport, Massachusetts-d. October 20, 1935, Washington, D.C.) served throughout the American Civil War and remained in the army at the war's close. Stickney was born in Bethel, Vt., in 1878. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1900 and from Harvard Medical School in 1903. He was one of the two Dartmouth students who participated in a summer study program in Greenland with Dartmouth professor C.H. Hitchcock.
